This site covers Web Page 101 SIG beginner session topics and some related information for the class. Visitors to this site are welcome! Learn a little about the process, even if you don't want to publish pages yourself. SIG sessions at the Tri-City Jewish Center in Rock Island are free for QCS members and visitors may attend a session before joining. Dues are only $30 per year for individuals. See the Quad-Cities Computer Society website ( http://www.qcs.org ) for a list of other SIG groups and club activities. |

May 14th, 2009 Second Session
We spent much of this session building a site from the ground up. Starting with a blank page, we tried to cover a little more about adding photos, arranging your pages, and creating links between pages.

May 28th, 2009 Fourth Session--Bonus class using remote connections
This session was conducted using Microsoft's SharedView and Skype to facilitate a remote connection to my home computer screen and sound. Seven other people joined this first QCS REMOTE SIG from their own homes. Initial response was good and it seems to be something that could be used for future board meetings, SIGs, "snowbirds" , bad weather, and even for individual help between members.
WEBS.COM provides FREE web space for your site. Set up an account at http://www.webs.com/.
1. Choose your "user name" and password and click the "Create a Website" button. The next page will let you know if your choices for name and password are acceptable.
2. Fill out the blanks to create your account. All fields are required.
3. Resist the temptation to use their "templates". At the end of that section, click where it says, "Use Advanced (HTML) Mode".
4. On the new page, you must type the two words you see, click the box to accept their terms and then the button to "Create my site".
5. You will receive an email confirmation with links to sign in, edit your site, or find help.
How to send your first web page to Webs.com will be covered later this session.
NVU (pronounced N-view) is a page editor or a program for creating web pages. Download Nvu's free software from this site: http://net2.com/nvu/.
Be sure the "FREE" version box is checked and click that choice.
On the next page, you will be able to choose a version for your own particular operating system if you don't use Windows.
Choose to save that download to your desktop. Once that .exe file is loaded, click the new iconon your desktop to install the program on your computer. (After installation, you can delete the downloaded exe file or move it to a "downloads" file on your computer.)
When the Nvu installation is complete, you will find this shortcut logo on your desktop:
NVU is as easy to use and works like a word processor. It's called a "WYSIWYG" or "what you see is what you get" page editor. When pages designed in Nvu are published, they generally appear the same.Tips to start your first web page with Nvu
